A tape measure is the best starting point. Measure on the ground rather than from a photograph, keeping lengths and widths at right angles. Choose metres or feet; the result is always shown in square metres. Switching units converts your existing measurements.
Rectangles and straight paths
Multiply length A by width B. For example, 8 m by 5 m gives 40 m². Measure only the area you want surfaced, excluding beds, walls and anything staying in place.
L-shaped spaces
Split the L into a main rectangle and an extra leg. Enter main length A and width B, then extension width C and depth D. D is the extra distance beyond the main rectangle, so the two rectangles do not overlap. We add A × B and C × D.
Tapered driveways
Measure both parallel ends and the perpendicular length between them. We multiply the length by the average of the two widths. The picture widens or narrows to match your figures.
Curved areas
The curved option models a rectangle with one rounded corner. Enter the overall length and width, plus the corner radius. The area is the rectangle minus the corner outside a quarter circle. This is an approximation for that shape, not a measurement of every curved driveway. For irregular curves or winding paths, break the area into simple sections and explain them in the enquiry.
